Fine goaltending by Glen Jackson and Martin Melichercik’s eye for goal proved the difference for Invicta Dynamos on Sunday night, as they moved level at the top of ENIHL Cup South with a 4-2 win over Peterborough Islanders.
Jackson stopped 28 shots, including four breakaways, and Slovak sniper Melichercik hit two more goals, his tenth and eleventh markers of the season, to help Invicta claim the two points.
“I thought we controlled the game,” coach Kevin Parrish said afterwards. “We moved the puck around well and our confidence is increasing. I’m happy with the performance and will take a result like this against Peterborough any time.”
Ryan Giles’ rasping slapshot left visiting goalie James Moore helpless as Invicta took a deserved lead at 11.20.
Melichercik eased the home side into a 2-0 lead on 22.20, from assists by Tim Smith and Karl Lennon. Melichercik then returned the favour, picking up a delightful first assist of the season, as he weaved his way through centre ice before feeding Karl Lennon to score the third.
Melichercik’s eleventh of the campaign put the game beyond doubt, as he picked his spot past Moore from the blueline to make it 4-0.
While the goals were flowing, Jackson time and again refused to be beaten, and looked invincible until James Ellwood at 51.52, and Shaun Yardley at 56.52 spoiled his chances of a second shutout in Invicta colours.
