ONE down, two to go in the Invicta Dynamos' quest to bring home the English National Premier League title as the Mos crushed Haringey Greyhounds 6-1 at the Ice Bowl last night.
Although the visitors took an early lead through former Dynamo Nick Burton at 4.03 any chances of a surprise upset were quickly dispelled with an instant reply forty seconds later from Mikko Skinnari. Man of the match Carl Greenhous then picked his spot to perfection to put Invicta in the lead at 6.53 and that's where they stayed.
Elliott Andrews, another player who had a great game, forced Tom Wills in to a desperate double save, then hit the pipes before Matt Beveridge bowed the back of the net at 11.46 for his 20th league goal of the season.
Five minutes in to the second period Greenhous grabbed his second firing the puck over the helpless Wills assisted by Andy Hannah. On the whole it was a good-mannered game so the old-fashioned punch-up between Jake French and Rob Cole was as surprising as it was tame with the Mos man the easy victor in the smock-over-the-head contest.
Both fighters received 2+2 for roughing and the Dynamos took the opportunity of the break in play to switch netminders with Adam Noctor replacing Matt Van Der Velden for the remainder of the game.
After a feisty five minutes with Peter Korff endearing himself to the 397-strong crowd by body-slamming and bundling opponents like a WWF king, Andrews finished off a slick team move involving Beveridge and Duane Ward with a blockbuster of a shot. A lovely chip by Ward saw him wrap up the scoring at 37.06 assisted by Andrews and Phil Chard, after Mike Kindred and Skinnari had both been denied by a very busy Wills who faced 52 shots on his goal.
In the last minutes of the game the team spirit was in evidence as the Mos did everything they could to try and get Greenhous his first hat-trick setting the big defenceman up time and time again.
Although his many shots on goal were good and true, even hitting the post, the puck just would not go in although his grinning face lit up the ice and the crowd showed their appreciation by applauding wildly.
The celebrations continued as Greg Hales was presented with the match puck to mark his 21st birthday but it was not all good as news of Samuli Mykkaen's move falling through filtered out.
Team manager Andy Mason said: "We agreed personal terms and he wanted the move but we could not agree terms with Solihull, which is a shame because he would have been a great asset. We're still looking out for any players that become available before Thursday's transfer deadline."
Reflecting on the game and the coming weeks Mason continued: "Haringey showed they're a hard-working team but we did what we had to do. There's a bit of tension creeping in as we realise what is at stake but we are working hard at not letting it get to us by concentrating on playing our own relaxed game."
