Danny East has opted to sign for Portsmouth instead of trying his luck with the Gills.
The 21-year-old spent the back end of last season on loan with Gillingham, from Championship side Hull City, appearing twice.
East was given a free transfer by Hull and Gills boss Martin Allen invited him in for pre-season training this summer.
But after receiving a concrete offer by Portsmouth, who were relegated from League 1, he signed up.
“I also spent time at Gillingham, who won promotion, so I know I can perform at this level. I can do even more, though, and I want to do that with Pompey.
East said: “Last season I played a lot of games on loan at Northampton, who are in the play-off final and will hopefully get promoted.
