Leicester 1 Charlton 1

PATRICK McCARTHY declined to celebrate his last second equaliser that kept Charlton in the play-off places against his former club Leicester on Saturday.

McCarthy, who skippered the Foxes last season, dashed their hopes of back-to-back home wins for the first time since August 2006, when he hooked the ball home from close range deep into second half stoppage time.

Though jeered relentlessly by home fans, he said: "There was no way I was going to celebrate because that would have been disrespectful to the club and the many friends that I still have in Leicester.

"I was surprised that the Leicester fans singled me out for stick because I never gave less than 100 per cent while I was with the club."

McCarthy's first Championship goal for the club rescued the Addicks from almost certain defeat after they had fallen behind to skipper Stephen Clemence's 77th minute header which looked good enough to win the game as the visitors struggled to find some semblance of their best form on a windswept afternoon.
