Gillingham v Aston Villa
Let's go and enjoy it – that’s the message from Gillingham’s FA Cup goal-hero Andy Barcham ahead of Sunday’s third round clash with Aston Villa.
Barcham scored the winning goals in the previous rounds against Bury and Stockport and is due to return to the Gillingham side this weekend for the sell-out clash at Priestfield.
The 22-year-old was expected to complete the paperwork on a new loan deal from Tottenham in time to play in Gillingham’s biggest game for years.
An 11,000-plus crowd will cram into Priestfield while the game will also be broadcast live on ITV.
Barcham said: "We’ve done really well in the FA Cup and it’s great to get this far. We’ve been rewarded with a draw against a team full of internationals.
"It will be a good test for us and we’ll be going out to enjoy ourselves, that’s what it’s all about, and hopefully we can get a result.
"All we can do is our best. There’s no hiding from the fact that they are a top four Premier League team and it’s going to be tough. We’re up against some great players like Ashley Young, Gabriel Agbonglahor and Gareth Barry.
"It’s on live television and it’s something else we’ve got to get used to and something else to enjoy.
"Naturally we’re all going to be nervous as it’s a big game but we just have to play our normal game and concentrate on what we’ve got to do and stay focused."
Barcham missed Sunday’s League 2 draw with Wycombe after his previous loan spell expired but he’s thrilled to have agreed a new deal which takes him through to the end of the season.
Barcham’s double strike in the second round replay at Stockport earned Gillingham their day in the spotlight and he’s not ruling out another surprise on Sunday.
He said: "We’re at home and we make it difficult for any team that comes here. It will be a full ground and will be quite intimidating for them. If we can play the way I know we can there’s no reason why we can’t win."
