FA Trophy and Ryman League round-up

FA Trophy third qualifying round

On an afternoon to forget for Kent sides in general, Dartford emerged with great credit as they went into the hat for the FA Trophy first round draw after a goalless draw at Blue Square South side St Albans City.

The Darts more than held their own against their higher league opponents and could have won the tie but for a fantastic Paul Bastock save which denied Lee Noble in the first half.

New signing at Princes Park Adam Gross did well to clear off the line from St Albans' Hassan Sulaiman and defender Jamie Coyle produced a fantastic block to deny Paul Hakim with seven minutes to go.

However, Ramsgate are out and still waiting for their first appearance in the competition's first round after going down 2-0 at Bognor Regis Town, another side from Blue Square South.

The Rocks went ahead nine minutes before the break through a deflected effort by Mike McEvery and the visitors' safe passage was assured when former Gillingham defender Duncan Jupp doubled the advantage on 84 minutes.

The Rams' best chance came at 1-0 but Steffan Ball was off target with a close range header.

Three second half goals were enough for Southern Premier side Brackley to knock Cray Wanderers out at Hayes Lane - but the result somewhat flattered the visitors.

Ben Mackey latched onto a long ball forward to put Brackley ahead just after the hour and two further goals in as many minutes late on sealed the win.

First, Tom Winters drilled home after being set up by Mackey before Dean Cracknell scored from the penalty spot after Mark Willy was deemed to have fouled Chris Harker in the area.

But Tyrone Sterling struck the bar for Cray with the scoreline blank and Tony Dolby went desperately close with a powerful header for the home side - who had manager Ian Jenkins sent from the dugout.

League leaders Dover returned to winning ways after the midweek setback at Sutton as they came from behind to take the points at Wealdstone, who had themselves been on a five-game winning streak.

The home side took the lead on 14 minutes when John Keister deflected a free-kick into his own net past keeper John Whitehouse - but Keister made amends in the 32nd minutes when he controlled Jon Wallis's centre and curled the ball into the net with the outside of his right foot.

The winner came 21 minutes into the second half when Alan Pouton netted from the spot after Guiliano Grazioli had been brought down in the box.

Margate also came from behind to record a welcome victory at Hendon.

The hosts went ahead against the run of play in the 28th minute when poor defending allowed Harry Hunt to score.

Gate almost levelled when Mo Takaloo struck a post but they did restore parity on 65 minutes when a fine move involving Masade and Kenny Pratt ended with Wayne Wilson netting at the near post.

And the points were sealed four minutes later when Wilson's effort was spilled but Takaloo - who was later dismissed after picking up a second booking for time wasting - was on hand to slot in the rebound.

Maidstone also took maximum points after beating Ashford Town (Middlesex) 2-1 at Bourne Park.

Ashford took the lead on 23 minutes when Scott Harris netted from close range.

And it looked as if the visitors would go away with all three points until substitute Lloyd Blackman sent a thumping shot past keeper Paul Burgess with seven minutes to play, and then James Pinnock's 10th of the season completed the turnaround in stoppage time.

However, Tonbridge had to settle for a point against struggling Harrow Borough.

The Angels got off to a dreadful start when Dewayne Clark capitalised on a slip by defender Lewis Hamilton and lobbed Lee Worgan after just 14 seconds.

But Anthony Storey's cracking shot from the edge of the box just before the hour rescued a draw for Tommy Warrilow's side.

Ryman League Division 1 South

Whitstable missed a penalty as they suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Worthing, with all three goals coming in the final 10 minutes.

Top scorer Jake Gess had the chance to put the Oystermen ahead on 10 minutes after a foul on Iain Pulman but his weak spot-kick was comfortably saved by Alan Mansfield.

Worthing broke the deadlock on 80 minutes when Scott Kirkwood bundled the ball in from almost on the line after a goalmouth scramble.

Whitstable looked to have snatched a point when Dan Whisker's thunderbolt from just outside the box levelled within a minute - but a controversial penalty decision gave Kirkwood the chance to win it in stoppage-time, which he duly did.

Folkestone also took nothing from their home match with Merstham.

James Hancock's scrappy effort put the visitors ahead at the Buzzlines Stadium after only 11 minutes - and that lead was doubled four minutes into the second half when a weak back header by Mark Trowse allowed Kwebena Agyei to score.

Frankie Chappell gave Invicta hope when he rose powerfully to head in Jimmy Jackson's corner in the 68th minute - but the home side couldn't find an equaliser in the closing stages despite plenty of pressure.

Ashford are 13th in the table after another draw - their ninth of the season - this time 0-0 with Whyteleafe at Homelands.

Ryman League Division 1 North

Chatham are up a place to 18th in the table after a fine 2-0 win over Leyton at Maidstone Road.

Steve Best and Max Brooks scored the goals for the home side.

Meanwhile, Thamesmead finished the day in 16th place after picking up a point in their home clash with Redbridge.

Mean fell behind in the 40th minute but Lewis Wood's scissor kick after Richard Dimmock's knock down earned Keith McMahon's side a 1-1 draw just two minutes later.
