FA Trophy first qualifying round round-up

SITTINGBOURNE produced a fine display to knock Chatham Town out of the FA Trophy on Saturday.

Southern League Division 1 East form went out the window as the Brickies swept Chats aside, despite the visitors dominating large spells of the game.

The home side went ahead against the run of play on 23 minutes when Kieran Marsh was in the right place to net after a goalmouth scramble.

It could have all been so different had Chatham’s Brendan Cass converted from the penalty spot just three minutes into the second half, but his effort was comfortably saved by Steve Williams.

Sittingbourne took advantage of that mistake and further goals from Bradley Spice and Jon Neal wrapped up the win.

Margate also enjoyed a 3-0 win at Bashley thanks to two first half goals from Leon Braithwaite and a second half strike from new signing Adolf Amoako.

Also through to the next round are Tonbridge Angels, Ramsgate and Bromley.

A 30th-minute goal from Luke Piscina was enough for Tony Dolby’s Angels to dispatch Cheshunt, although the home side had Jerome John to thank for a superb goalline clearance late on to preserve their lead.

Jim Ward’s Ramsgate side scored four second half goals to see off Northwood 4-2. Shaun Welford, Oli Short and Stefan Ball twice were the men on the scoresheet.

Strikes from substitute Fraser Logan and Adam Locke were good enough for Ryman League Premier Division Bromley to beat Ryman League Division 1 Ashford Town at Homelands.

Folkestone Invicta must replay on Tuesday night after only managing a draw against Whyteleafe at the Buzzlines Stadium.

The visitors took a shock lead through Andrew Martins in the 52nd minute, but James Dryden was on hand to capitalise on a defensive error from Leigh Luce and tap home an equaliser with nine minutes to play.

Also replaying on Tuesday are Dover Athletic and Dartford after a 1-1 draw at Crabble.

Eddie McClements put the visitors in front in the 14th minute after excellent work from Ian Pulman.

But incessant Whites pressure eventually got its reward when Nicky Humphrey glanced in Lee Spiller’s corner with 18 minutes to go.

Dover suffered a first half blow when winger Daniel Braitwaite was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg.
