Figures show that MyFootballClub members almost picked the team for the first time to face Wrexham in the postponed Blue Square Premier home game last Saturday.

The game was called off shortly before midday because of a frozen pitch but the poll was the closest since the website came on board last February.

A total of 265 members voted for coach Liam Daish to pick the team and 227 opted to do it themselves – a difference of only 38.

Ebbsfleet chief executive David Davis said: “Picking the team was always one of the concepts of the model.

"If that is what the members want, then we have to do it. Liam has always said he hopes it never happens but if does we have to deal with it."

He added: “I was part of MyFootball before I became involved with the club and at first I was bullish about being able to pick the team.

“I quickly realised, though, that I didn’t have the time or the inclination to take on that responsibility. You need to research and study all the games and I have no objections if people are able to do that.”
