CHARLTON’S £180,000 signing of Icelandic starlet Rurik Gislason was partially funded by the supporters’ fund raising scheme Valley Gold.

The 17-year-old attacking midfielder arrived at The Valley from Icelandic Division 1 club HK Kopavogur with a little help from fellow Icelander Hermann Hreidarsson.

While striker Jay Bothroyd’s arrival from Italian club Perugia took the headlines, Charlton moved quietly and swifty to complete the deal for Gislason who was also attracting interest from Bayern Munich, PSV Eindhoven and Ajax.

The former Anderlecht player, who can also play up front, starred for Charlton’s Under-18s in their 1-0 defeat to Dutch giants Feyenoord.

Steve Gritt, Charlton’s academy manager, said: "He was probably our best player against Feyenoord. He had plenty of energy and worked hard.

"I know he’ll be bringing those qualities into the club and he will need those in abundance."
