WELLING'S hopes of a play-off place took a major dent as a late goal proved enough for Farnborough to claim maximum points on Tuesday.

A game where neither side showed enough ambition to win was not helped by a bobbly pitch that did nothing to encourage a passing game.

Welling had the edge in the first half, however, and James Pinnock wastefully fired over in the 21st minute after his initial touch had taken him wide.

John Guest headed over from close-range before Rob Owen flicked on Jamie Day's corner only for Chris Moore to lift his effort over the crossbar.

Farnborough had their first effort at goal in stoppage time at the end of the half when Scott Canham's 20-yard shot was saved by Jamie Turner.

The home side improved after the break although Welling's Danny Kedwell wasted a good opening in the 54th minute, his low shot was blocked by Kevin Scriven despite Matt Bodkin appearing to be in a better position.

Sean Hankin headed wide for Farnborough before Turner's ill-advised decision to pick up a backpass created more danger, with Hankin's goalbound shot blocked by the Wings defence.

With 13 minutes left, Welling manager Adrian Pennock introduced Steve Perkins and played three up front but it was Farnborough who got the decisive goal when Leon Solomon needlessly gave away a free-kick and a lack of marking gave Warren McBean a simple tap-in at the far post.

Welling should have still claimed a share of the spoils, however, but Perkins embarrassingly shot over from close-range after Scriven had fumbled Bodkin's low shot three minutes from the end.
