Welling forward Loui Fazakerley has hit back at claims that he turned down a move to Histon for money reasons.
Fazakerley decided to sign a contract with Welling rather than move up a division to the Blue Square Premier.
According to reports, Histon boss Steve Fallon claimed that Fazakerley's decision could have been related to money, but Fazakerley has rubbished that.
"I was absolutely fuming when I heard that," revealed Fazakerley, who only joined Welling from Bromley last month. "I don't know where he has got that piece of information from.
"It has probably hurt their pride but a deal was never sorted, we were just talking, and money was never the reason at all. Welling showed me more commitment and I wanted to repay that.
"There's no truth in Welling offering me more money - not at all. It wasn't money-orientated, I'm not the type of player to chase bucks, I just want to go and play."
Fazakerley stated that Histon did not offer a contract and added that Histon's direct style of play was also a contributing factor.
"They didn't put a contract on the table," he added. "The feeling I got from Histon was that it was more of a trial and I wasn't really sure how much they wanted me. Welling showed more commitment.
"I heard quite a lot about how Histon play and, for a player of my size - even though I fancy myself in a tussle - it doesn't really suit my game. I like it into feet and Welling play decent stuff and play to my strengths.
"I want to play in a team that play the way I like it. I could have easily gone there but I wouldn ' t have got the best out of it - I can't turn into Duncan Ferguson and flick balls on, it's not my game!
"I'm an ambitious player, I want to go as high as I can. People will say why didn't I go to histon but it wasn't the right club for me. Welling won't stand in my way in the future but I need to play well for them first."
