Injured defender Matt Fish has taken encouragement from the progress made by Anton Robinson.

The Huddersfield midfielder suffered a serious knee injury while playing on loan for the Gills against Rotherham on April 1.

Robinson is due back playing in early October and Gills boss Martin Allen now believes Fish can make a similarly-paced recovery.

Allen said: “I spoke to Anton over the weekend and have kept in touch with him because he got injured playing for us.

"He has had a chat with Matt and hopefully he will be looking at the same length of time. We have had a top, top consultant to do the operation, so Matt is in good hands and we hope it is sooner rather than later.”

Fish snapped a knee ligament on the opening day of the season and had surgery last Tuesday. He was back in the club on Monday for the start of his rehab as the long road to recovery starts.

Allen said: “He came to the game on Saturday and it was great to see him. It gave everyone a lift because Matt is a popular player and a good person.

“He is in two or three days a week for rehab. Matt is in good shape and there is no doubt he will play here before the end of the season.”
