Fleet boss hits back in Akinde row

Ebbsfleet manager Liam Daish has stood his ground after Peterborough United withdrew an offer of £100,000 for striker John Akinde.

The Posh reportedly made four separate offers for the teenager but decided to withdraw their interest after claiming the Fleet boss went back on a verbal agreement.

Peterborough's Barry Fry claimed in the Non-League Paper that Daish had given them permission to speak to Akinde once their bid reached £100,000, only for the Fleet boss to then turn down the newly-promoted League 1 side's six-figure offer.

Daish confirmed that the Fleet received an offer for Akinde but has distanced himself from Fry's comments.

"I like to keep things like this confidential," insisted Daish. "I'm not going to air my views as I've got a young player on board and I'm mindful he's got to be looked after.

"There's a lot of factors I wasn't comfortable with. I didn't think it was right for the club or the player, and I wasn't comfortable with the way he went about it. Barry decided he wanted to withdraw an offer and that's fair enough."

After speaking to Peterborough manager Darren Ferguson, Daish believed the matter was closed.

He explained: "I spoke to Darren and he was understanding of the situation. Then Barry got involved.

"I think that's his way. He's trying to be clever but he's not. I won't be bullied into doing anything just because it's Barry Fry."
