Fleet's league campaign ends with a whimper

Ebbsfleet United 1 Oxford United 3

Ebbsfleet United's Blue Square Premier season ended in a disapointing 3-1 reverse against Oxford United at Stonebridge Road on Saturday.

With the pageantry of the player of the season awards prior to the game and the undoubted distraction of a trip to Wembley on May 10, Fleet seemed to forget there was a game to be played.

They were caught cold within 30 seconds when Oxford's Matthew Green beat the offside trap to race clear and beat Lance Cronin.

Phil Trainer made it 2-0 on 20 minutes from close range and Green made it three nine minutes later as the Fleet back four fell apart.

After the break Fleet were a different side and George Purcell pulled one back on 49 minutes.

However, the closest they came to a memorable comeback was when Purcell's 20-yard effort hit the post in injury-time.

Now there is the small matter of Torquay at Wembley in the FA Trophy final.

Ebbsfleet: Cronin, Ricketts, Smith, McCarthy (MacDonald 45), Opinel, Purcell, Barrett, Bostwick (Hearn 76), Long (Eribenne 88), McPhee, Moore.

Subs not used: Mott, Hawkins.

Attendance: 1,852.
