Gillingham 1 Crewe Alexandra 0

MICHAEL FLYNN struck a 30-yard wonder goal to ease Gillingham’s relegation fears on Saturday.

The Gills captain netted on 71 minutes to break the stalemate and complete the club’s first win in five games.

Visiting keeper Ben Williams pulled off a number of saves to thwart Gillingham but in the end could do nothing to stop Flynn’s strike, after the midfielder ran from his own half before netting.

The first half may not have been the most entertaining but there were still goal scoring chances at both ends.

Gary Mulligan had a stinging shot saved by the keeper on 12 minutes while Crewe’s best efforts were stopped by Romain Larrieu, who was having an equally good game in a Gills shirt.

Gillingham reverted to three strikers mid-way through the second half, as they looked to capitalise on their superior possession but nobody could have predicted where the winner would come from, as Flynn unleashed a terrific shot to win the game.

Gillingham: Larrieu, Southall, Sancho, Johnson, Jackman, Bentley, Crofts, Flynn, Spiller (Chorley 85), Mulligan McDonald (Ndumbu-Nsungu 85).
Subs Not Used: Cox, Pugh, Collin.
Attendance: 6,373.
