Gillingham 1- 0 Doncaster Rovers

GILLINGHAM pulled off a superb 1-0 victory over Doncaster after Michael Flynn fired in an 18th minute winner at Priestfield on Tuesday.

The victory was the Gills' third league success on the trot on home soil after they turned in a spirited display against Dave Penney's high-flying Rovers side.

Gillingham had opened the scoring in the first half when Matt Jarvis drilled a shot into the box, Neil Harris was unable to connect properly, but the ball came out to Michael Flynn who sent a soaring shot into the roof of the net from 18 yards, and it proved to be the winner.

From that point on Doncaster dominated, with Lewis Guy continuing to be a threat, and substitute Paul Green, who replaced the injured Dave Mulligan, also coming close.

Rovers were guilty of missing numerous first half chances, although Gills keeper Jason Brown at times seemed to be single-handedly keeping his side in the game, saving one-handed from Guy and making a great block when Green shot goal-ward.

The second half started slowly for Doncaster, with Sean Thornton's weak shot being the player's last contribution, as he was replaced on the hour by Jonathan Forte, much to Thornton's disgust.

Rovers almost equalised on 66 minutes when skipper Steve Foster laid the ball back to Forte, the striker hit a powerful shot that ricocheted off Danny Jackman and cannoned off the post.

Rovers keeper Jan Budtz made a couple of good saves mid-way through the second half, as Gillingham grew stronger, saving from Darren Byfield and Akwasi Edusei.

Gillingham had to hang on towards the end, as Doncaster went in search of an equaliser, and after a few nervy moments they secured the vital three points.

Gillingham: Brown; Wallis, Cox, Johnson, Jackman; Jarvis, Crofts, Flynn, Williams; Harris (Byfield 45), Fobe-Edusei (Spiller 84).
Subs Not Used: Smith, Rose, Bullock.
Attendance: 4,816.
