Ford: I'm not a fan of contrived games

WE'VE read with interest the comments of Worcestershire coach Steve Rhodes after our rain-affected one-day championship game with Worcestershire.

Clearly, Steve saw things a little differently to me. He did say before the start of the day's play, when there were suggestions of opening the game up, that he would only be interested if they could bowl first.

He wanted to open the game up, but he also wanted it all heavily stacked in his favour but, without seeing or knowing how the pitch would behave, we could not commit to anything.

They game themselves a double chance by having a bowl first but, once they saw they couldn't bowl us out, they suddenly came back and said "how about a game?" Then, after having a bit of a go with the bat, they realised they had no chance.

I'm not a big fan of contrived games. No matter how anyone words it, to me it seems to involve some form of match fixing to get a result in one day.

I don't feel it's a great regulation and I would much prefer the option that when a match has been destroyed through rain to carry on under normal regulations and play for as many batting and bowling bonus points as you can in the time remaining.
