Welling boss Andy Ford has urged his players to finish their season with a flourish after watching their play-off hopes end on Monday.

The Wings lost to a 36th-minute Shaun Wilkinson goal while Chelmsford, who occupy the final Blue Square South play-off spot, overcame title-chasing Hampton.

Ford said: "It was always a tall order to reach the play-offs after where we were last season.

"My expectation was always a top 10 finish and that remains the case. That's not a lack of ambition, I'm just being realistic.

"I feel sorry for the fans as they've been tremendous this season.

"I want to win every game from now to the end of the season, that's not going to be easy as we've got the likes of Thurrock and Team Bath to play. It's my job to raise the players."

Ford felt that the Wings deserved a point at Havant but admitted that he wished he had named defender Tony Sinclair in his starting line-up.

"With hindsight I should have played Tony from the start but he has been ill for over a week now," said Ford.

"It was a game of two halves, we struggled in the first half as they played three up front and in the end we had to change our shape.

"It was all us in the second half. I wouldn't say we deserved to win the game but we certainly deserved a point."

Welling entertain Thurrock on Good Friday, kick-off 3pm.
