Ford: Our batsmen showed plenty of grit

THE match down at Hove proved to be tough with the toss and the luck against us, but I was extremely proud again of the character shown by our guys.

It was a courageous show with the bat to save the game, but we didn’t have as much penetration with the ball as I would have liked.

Amjad Khan bowled really well, but Tyron Henderson was carrying a niggle and bowled within himself and our other debutant, Dwayne Bravo, did not quite get his length right.

Khan led the attack very well. We are hoping that, once his qualification goes through this winter, the England selectors will take a look at him.

Unfortunately, we also downed two or three more chances at first slip in Hove which, without Hall and Kemp, is a problem area.

The most natural slipper from the alternatives is Rob Key, as an opening bat he has good reflexes and sees the ball early, so we will probably try him next to Martin van Jaarsveld, who at second slip is possibly one of the best catchers in the game.
