Barry Fuller has been handed the Gillingham captaincy by manager Mark Stimson.
The Ashford-born defender was given the role for Tuesday night’s Johnstone’s Paint Trophy match against Colchester and will remain as permanent skipper.
He replaces Andrew Crofts as captain who has had the role since the departure of Michael Flynn.
Fuller said: “I live locally and I’ve always thought about playing for Gillingham and when the opportunity came to play for them it was an honour and to be captain and to be a local boy I can’t ask for much more.”
Stimson has picked Fuller for every game this season and he’s convinced the role will suit the right-back.
The Gills boss said: “For me you look at captains and when I was in my playing days and even now I look at things and think, captains for me are either the best player in the team or one of the best motivators.
“Barry would agree that he may not be the best player but he’s a great motivator.”
