Charlton 1 Barnsley 3
Angry Charlton supporters demonstrated outside The Valley calling for the sacking of manager Alan Pardew as the club slipped into the Coca-Cola Championship relegation zone.
The Addicks have failed to win any of their last five games and this was the day the supporters' patience finally snapped.
In addition to calling for Pardew's head, they chanted: "We want our Charlton back," in a dismal end to a dreadful day for the club.
Pardew, whose contract expires in Christmas 2009, made no excuses after his side conceded three set-piece goals, all in the first half.
"I have to look within the squad and the character of the players," he said. "I don't blame the crowd who became frustrated.
"What I must do now is lean on our more experienced players because we've got a fight on our hands.
"I won't crawl under a stone and hide and I won't be afraid to make what I believe will be some tough decisions.
"If the finance is available I will bring a player in on loan."
Barnsley were heading for their first win at Charlton in 22 attempts as early as the third minute when Jon Macken opened the scoring, snapping up a half clearance from Martin Cranie following Iain Hume's free-kick.
Macken increased their lead in the 17th minute after Charlton goalkeeper Nicky Weaver failed to hold Dennis Souza Guedes' shot following another Hume free-kick.
Barnsley sealed victory in the 39th minute when central defender Darren Moore headed in Rob Kozluk's free-kick.
Charlton would have lost by more had Barnsley not taken their foot off the gas in the second half.
Skipper Mark Hudson headed Charlton's consolation goal in the 75th minute. But by then the side looked utterly demoralised.
