AS BOTH teams strove to win the miss of the season award it was fitting that it took a lucky ricochet to decide the outcome of this game.
Gillingham carved out more chances, but it was like a light training session for Saddlers’ keeper Gavin Ward who had shot after shot hit straight at him.
The only goal came four minutes after the break when Jorge Leitao danced past and nutmegged Roland Edge. It looked like he had taken it a fraction too far, but when he mis-hit the shot it spun wildly past the surprised Vince Bartram and into the bottom corner of the net.
On the hour and within a minute of each other came the two great howlers.
First the Portuguese goalscorer Leitao, whose miss was quite breathtaking as he scooped the ball up and over the crossbar from two-yards.
Tommy Johnson went close to bettering it from a similar position, but at least he had the goalie to beat, a task he spectacular failed.
The only positives for Gills were the tireless display put in by 21-year-old midfielder Danny Spiller on his league debut and the burgeoning skills of 16-year-old striker Akwasi Edusei who appeared as a late substitute for his first taste of first team football.
