Gillingham 0 Southampton 2

Gillingham bowed out of the Worthington Cup at the hands of a quality Southampton side.

The visitors hit the front in the seventh minute thanks to a controversial penalty. Guy Butters was adjudged to have fouled James Beatty and the former Blackburn man got up to convert the penalty himself.

Chances were few and far between but Gills came close through Chris Hope and Guy Ipoura. Saints wrapped the game up six minutes from time. Beatty surged down the right and found Marian Pahars, who headed the ball home.

Gills had suffered an early setback when Iffy Onoura was carried off in the 12th minute with what looked like a nasty leg injury.
