GUY IPOUA shot Gills to the top of Nationwide Division 1 at a sun-kissed Priestfield.
This was the fourth consecutive win over the Lions and gave manager Andy Hessenthaler the perfect birthday present.
Millwall started brightly, probably with the telling-off after their 6-0 defeat at Rotherham still ringing in their ears, but couldn't find a way through.
But it wasn't long before Gills started to take a strangle hold on the game.
Mamady Sidebe and Ipoua went close early on and Barry Ashby forced a good save from Tony Warner in the 20th minute.
Ipoua should have put Gills in front on the stroke of half time when he chested the ball down unmarked and 12 yards from goal but slipped as he shot and the chance went begging.
Paul Shaw smashed a shot off the Millwall bar five minutes after the restart but Shaw set up the crucial goal when he slid the ball to Ipoua and he put the ball past Warner and into the net.
Shaw should have made it two but Warner made a good save but Gills hung on to record their third straight 1-0 win.
