Gillingham's poor run comes to an end

GILLINGHAM ended a run of four consecutive league defeats with a 2-1 victory at home to Rotherham. Andy Hessenthaler's side got off to a good start and scored after only 27 minutes when Marlon King's fierce drive from 25 yards found the bottom corner of the net.

The home side could, and possibly should, have extended their lead before the half time whistle but King and Ty Gooden were denied by visiting goalkeeper Mike Pollitt.

However, the Gills didn't have to wait long after the break for their second goal as Chris Hope netted from a free-kick after King was fouled on the edge of the box.

The goal seemed to lift the visitors and they dominated the remainder of the game without finding a way past Vince Bartram until stoppage time when Mark Robins netted with a header.

The result moved the Gills up to 15th place in the First Division and left Rotherham bottom of the table.
