Morecambe v Gillingham

Gillingham manager Mark Stimson is determined to put right the club’s woeful away form starting tomorrow (Saturday) at Morecambe.

The Gills have only won twice on the road in League 2 and that poor away record has left them facing a battle to keep in touch with the division’s front runners.

Stimson’s side are sitting 10th in the table and are four points off the play-off places.

The last time the side’s met the Gills comfortably won 5-0.

Stimson said: “If we play like we did in the first game against them then we’ll do really well. The away form is something we want to improve on in the second half of the season, because it hasn’t been as good as we would have liked.

“We’re looking to start that on Saturday but they’ll be looking to put one over on us because of the result earlier on in the season.

“We just have to make sure we do better away from home in the second half of the season if we want to be in the position we all want to be at the end of the season.”

Stimson is down to 14 senior players for the match with Barry Fuller (pneumonia), Garry Richards (suspended), Albert Jarrett (ankle), Luis Cumbers (leg) and Mark McCammon (hamstring) all out.

“The team won’t be changed much from the one that played against Aston Villa,” said Stimson.

“If they can get near that performance then that will be enough to beat Morecambe because that performance was very, very good and so touch wood there will be no interference with that starting eleven.

“Three points would be lovely and it doesn’t matter if it’s 1-0 or 5-0. To get the first double of the season would be good but its going to take hard work as one thing Morecambe do is they have a go. In the game where we won 5-0 the first 20 minutes was quite even and they had a good chance where Royce pulled off a good save.

“We’ve got to be ready for them and we need to have the same attitude as we showed in the Aston Villa and the Wycombe game. If we do that we’ll have too much for them.”
