Gillingham v Barnet
Gillingham manager Mark Stimson is refusing to rule out his side’s chances of making a late charge for the League 2 title.
The Gills sit six points behind current leaders Brentford and, as Stimson prepares his side to host lowly Barnet tomorrow (Saturday), he still has one eye on that top spot.
“We’ve got to aim for it,” said Stimson. “Brentford have got a game in hand but that game is Dagenham away and it’s not the easiest of places to go.
“This week they go to Bradford who haven’t won for a while so who knows?
“The most important thing is that we stay focused on what we want to do. The players will be told they have to work hard and give everything they’ve got.
“If they do that, with the quality we have as well, which we showed last Saturday, we won’t be far away.”
Saturday’s visitors Barnet have all but secured their League 2 status for next season. Despite their lowly position, a 1-1 draw at promotion-chasing Wycombe on Tuesday was a reminder that they won’t be an easy target.
“They will definitely stay up,” said the Gills boss. “They’ve got a new man in charge, Ian Hendon, who I know from my playing days and he has some loan players who are decent.
“If we can repeat what we did last Saturday we shouldn’t have any problems, but it’s going to be hard to get to that level again.”
Stimson may look to make changes for this weekend despite earning a draw at Brentford last weekend.
Two of last week’s starting eleven are carrying knocks and the Gills boss may also change his formation from 4-4-2 to 4-3-3.
“We’ll see who is fit and available,” he said. “There might be a change or two. There are a couple of knocks and we won’t know until we assess them who is going to be available.”
