Gillingham's FA Cup game with Aston Villa is on the verge of being a sell-out.
Season ticket holders and fans with ticket stubs from the club’s two previous home games have been flocking to Priestfield this week to guarantee their seat for Gillingham’s biggest game in years.
The game is likely to be sold out by the end of the weekend, two weeks before it takes place, as the remaining tickets go on general sale on Sunday.
Speaking on Wednesday morning, Gillingham’s chief executive Mark Jones revealed just how few tickets were left on sale.
“It will be a sell-out and I’ve got no doubts about that,” he said.
“The situation at the minute is that tickets in the Brian Moore stand are on sale. Half of those are going to Aston Villa supporters and the other half are now on sale. That started on Tuesday morning and we’ve already sold a lot of seats in there.
“We do still have around 160 single seats around the rest of the ground. If fans want to buy corporate tickets then there are still 70 available at £60 plus vat. We’ve already sold 250 and they include a sit down Sunday lunch in the Great Hall at Priestfield, entertainment and a seat next to the Directors’ Box and that’s not bad value for such a big game.
“I did always think we would sell out but we didn’t want to be over-confident. If you look at how many fans we took to Barnet, 950 from a 2,200 crowd, that just shows that the potential for this club is there.
“There’s nothing better than being there live if you love football. I’m not knocking the TV broadasters as they are a big part of football but this is a one off game and we haven’t had a big one like this for some time.”
The club stand to make over £250,000 from the match. Jones is expecting gate receipts to total around £180,000 alone, although a big chunk of that will be split between the Gills, Villa and the FA.
ITV will be handing over £160,000 in TV revenue and the club have already banked £50,000 with wins in rounds one and two. £75,000 is up for grabs to the winner of the third round tie with Aston Villa.
*Season ticket holders have until 6pm on Saturday to claim their seat, while that deadline is also for those with ticket stubs. All tickets remaining will then be on sale, although Mr Jones admits “not many” are likely to be available. For ticket details call the club on 01634 300000 (option 3).
