Gillingham 1 Swansea 2

Two goals against the run of play on the stroke of half-time were enough for Swansea to push Gillingham further into the League 1 relegation mire at Priestfield on Saturday.

The win confirmed the visitors' promotion to the Championship but, with Millwall and Crewe both winning, the defeat was seriously damaging for Mark Stimson's side.

The Gills boss said: "I thought we deserved something from the game and for the first 40 minutes we were playing some of the best football weve played since Ive been at the club.

"I cant fault the players efforts and what they put in was spot on. It was just one of those days where a couple of shots went the wrong side of the post for us.

"Were crossing everything now in the hope we can get enough points to survive in this division. Two teams around us have won and that makes it very difficult for us."

Simeon Jackson had a golden chance to put the Gills in front after 12 minutes but he blazed wastefully over after the ball had been deflected into his path.

But the home fans were celebrating on 22 minutes when Nicky Southall's cross caused confusion and, after Simon King's effort had been blocked, the ball fell to Dennis Oli to finish beyond Swans keeper Dorus De Vries.

Oli had a decent chance to double the lead just two minutes later but shot over after Adam Miller had broken through. Andrew Crofts also headed wide as Gillingham dominated.

But the visitors levelled in the 44th minute when Derek Stillie couldn't hold an initial shot from Andy Robinson and Guillem Bauza pounced. Then, in first-half stoppage-time, Bauza netted again after another Robinson effort had been parried.

The nearest the Gills came to an equaliser in the second half came with seven minutes to go when substitute Donovan Simmonds came agonisingly close to converting Jackson's cross after a fine run, while Jackson himself shot wide in added time.

Gillingham: Stillie, Cullip, Richards, King, Southall (Pugh 85), Fuller, Maher, Crofts, Miller (Griffiths 66), Oli (Simmonds 75), Jackson.

Subs not used: Kiely, Clohessy.

Attendance: 8,520.
