CIVIL Services Snooker Club’s D side are beginning to gain a reputation as the glamour team in the Medway Messenger Snooker League.
Not necessarily because they are the biggest or best team in the tournament, although they are currently holding their own in Division 1, it’s just that they have Gillingham footballers Nicky Southall and Chris Hope in their team.
Amazingly the duo aren’t the first members of the Gills squad to play for the team after Richard Green represented the club 10 years.
Green recommended snooker-fan Southall to Civil Services five years ago before he asked Hope to join the club a couple of years later. However, as team captain George Cass explained, the players wouldn’t get in the team if they weren’t good enough.
He said: “It’s lovely to have Chris and Nicky in our team but we would drop them if they couldn't play snooker.
“In competitions, I think Nicky’s highest break is 46 while Chris has popped in a 38 break, so they are reasonably good players.
“When we play away, the opposition relish the opportunity to face Nicky and Chris, because it’s always nice to say to your friends that you played snooker, or even beat, a couple of Gillingham footballers.”
