GILLINGHAM swept aside high-flying Nottingham Forest with a trio of second half goals in League 1 at Priestfield.

Gary Mulligan, Adam Miller and Leroy Griffiths smashed home the goals to end a barren run of results for the Gills.

It was a win which banished the memories of Gillingham?s 4-0 defeat when the sides last met at Forest?s City Ground in September.

The first half ended goalless despite both sides having good chances to open the scoring.

Gills? best effort fell to recalled striker Mulligan but his close range shot was deflected wide by the keeper.

It was Mulligan who gave Gillingham the lead on 49 minutes, when Andrew Crofts? shot was spilled by keeper Paul Smith into the Irishman?s path and he made no mistake from two yards out.

Gillingham doubled their lead 12 minutes later when Adam Miller struck his second goal in two games with a vicious low shot.

The third came from Leroy Griffiths who latched onto Kelvin Wilson?s back header and lashed the ball past Smith.

Gills manager Mark Stimson was delighted to see his side grab their first win in four games.

?That was a fantastic way to finish the year,? he said. ?We were beating a team top of the league 1-0, it could have gone either way, but all of a sudden we got the second and then you feel the release from the crowd and they started to enjoy it.

?They began to realise we really could go on and beat the team at the top of the league.

?I?ve only been here a few weeks but I?m sure the last year has not been as rewarding or as exciting as that game.

?It was a fantastic performance from every player who took part and at certain stages the crowd joined in and enjoyed it as well which was great to see.?
