Southend 0 Gillingham 1

GILLINGHAM supporters who made the trip to Essex were given a treat as they saw their side whip the league leaders.

And it was no fluke. Gillingham were on top for much of the match. It was their fifth straight league victory.

Tommy Black netted the all-important clincher in the second minute of the second half.

Southend, sitting at the top of League 1, were clear favourites before the game, but Ronnie Jepson's men had other ideas.

Jepson said after the game: "I am so pleased for the lads. They dug in collectively. On the counter attack I thought we might have grabbed a couple more."

He added: "I am delighted for everyone connected with Gillingham Football Club."

Gillingham: Brown, Wallis, Cox, Sancho, Jackman, Black (Spiller 85), Crofts, Pouton, Jarvis, Byfield, Mulligan.
Subs Not Used: Crichton, Johnson, Flynn, Harris.
Attendance: 11, 195.
