GILLINGHAM Football Club will be leaving Medway because there is nowhere suitable to build a new stadium, chairman Paul Scally revealed.
Mr Scally has always said the club would outgrow Priestfield Stadium and needed a new home. At a press conference in April, Mr Scally said Temple Marsh was the only site suitable in Medway for his multi-million pound plans, which included an hotel, casino and housing as well as a covered stadium. If a new stadium wasn't built there, he would consider taking it outside the towns.
But this week, he withdrew his interest in the site, which will come as a bitter blow to fans.
Mr Scally said at a press conference on Thursday that the plans to relocate to Temple Marsh were scrapped principally due to the cost of improving transport links.
He added the club were sad to have to leave Medway, but also vowed not to follow the example of Wimbledon and leave the county completely.
The club is now examining four alternative sites in Swale, Maidstone and Gravesend.
Mr Scally told KM-fm he is confident that fans will continue to get behind the club...
