Gills moving in the right direction

PLEASED: John Gorman

GILLINGHAM assistant manager John Gorman hailed his players for earning their fifth point of the week at Sheffield United.

The 0-0 draw moves Gillingham above Nottingham Forest in the league and was achieved with a determined defensive display.

Despite having no shots on target and just two in total, Gorman insisted Gillingham were worthy of their share of the spoils on Saturday.

He said: “We came here to get a result and we achieved one. We have had a lot of injuries but we are starting to bring players back and had a really strong bench today.

“The players had to defend well and never really looked like conceding. Even the forwards had to come back and help defend. The boys have had to recover from the Watford and Wolves games."

The draw at Bramall Lane showed how far Gills have come since Gorman replaced Wayne Jones as Andy Hessenthaler's number two in October.

His first game at Gillingham was a 3-1 defeat to Sheffield United at Priestfield. After that game, Gillingham had lost five in a row and were conceding an average of more than two goals a game in the league. They have now kept three consecutive clean sheets.

Gorman said: “We played some good football in the 3-1 defeat but we made some mistakes at the back. But today we were brilliant in defence.

“Our centre halves played very well and we stopped Paul Shaw from hurting us this time. Our attitude at the moment is that we are not going to get beaten and there is a great team spirit."
