A NUMBER of names have already been linked to the vacant Gillingham job. But who do the fans want? Have your say in our poll.
Iffy Onuora would be a popular appointment but chairman Paul Scally won’t be short of applicants for the job.
Onuora returned to the club at the start of the season as first team coach and the former striker scored 49 league goals in 147 appearances for the club.
His managerial experience, however, is limited to a spell as Paul Merson’s assistant at Walsall and a brief period as caretaker manager of Swindon.
Another popular choice would be John Gorman. The former England No.2 has a 100 per cent record as Gillingham manager, although his reign amounted to one victory over Nottingham Forest, in November 2004.
Gorman, who had previously been Andy Hessenthaler’s assistant for a brief time, is still on good terms with Gills chairman Paul Scally and was in the crowd to watch the 3-0 defeat at Southend on Saturday.
Martin Allen, known as “Mad Dog” for his all-action style in his playing days with QPR, is also in the frame. Allen is out-of-work since being sacked as manager of Leicester.
Leicester had only lost one of their opening four matches and had thrashed Championship high-flyers Watford 4-1 when chairman Milan Mandaric showed him the door.
Dave Bassett is an experienced manager that the club could turn to for instant results. He’s bossed teams in all divisions of the Football League. Former player Micky Adams has been linked with the club before. Between 1979 and 1983 he made 92 appearances for Gillingham and is now assistant manager at Colchester.
Scott Fitzgerald, Gillingham’s youth team coach and former Brentford boss, along with Colchester reserve team coach and former Gills player Joe Dunne have also been linked.
But maybe you can think of someone else. Let us know.
