Gills slip into drop zone

Gillingham 1 Ipswich Town 2

GILLINGHAM slipped into the relegation zone after two second half goals in the space of five minutes gave a Martijn Reuser inspired Ipswich Town side victory.

A bustling performance in the first 45 minutes saw Andy Hessenthaler’s men take a deserved lead, John Hills slamming home a penalty after Matt Elliot had tripped Patrick Agyemang.

The eighth minute opener stunned a poor Ipswich side, who were not living up to their highest scorers in the league reputation.

However, the second half was a different story as Dutch midfielder Reuser came off the bench to score a stunning free-kick and send in a pinpoint cross for Darren Bent to head home the winner.

Hessenthaler said: “The first half we probably worked too hard and ran out of steam a bit. There have been too many times this season when poor defending meant we lost by a single goal in games where we should have got something and that’s why we’re in the position we’re in.”
