GILLINGHAM front man Tommy Johnson could have played his last game for the club as speculation increased that he is on the verge of returning to his first club Notts County.
The Nationwide League, Division 2, strugglers have inquired as to the availability of the striker who turned 33 on January 15 and scored a spectacular reply in Saturday's 2-1 defeat at Derby.
Though Johnson owns property in Nottingham and remains a huge favourite with County supporters, he has a year of his Gillingham contract remaining and has settled in the Kings Hill area at West Malling near Maidstone where his eldest daughter has just started school.
Asked about his future, Gillingham coach Wayne Jones did not dismiss rumours linking him with a return to Meadow Lane.
"Although Tommy is a North East lad, he has property in Nottingham and eventually would like to return to the area," said Jones. "Whether it's sooner or later I don't know.
"If he keeps on scoring the kind of goals he did against Derby, we would not want to let him go. But you have to think of the player who is 33 and maybe Notts will offer him his last contract."
