Gills trail at the break

GILLINGHAM are a goal down to Cheltenham Town at half-time on the opening day of the League 1 season.

The home side started the better of the two teams and took the lead in the 24th minute.

Gillingham claimed offside to no avail as Steven Gillespie latched onto a pass from Jeremy Gil and beat keeper Simon Royce.

The goal had been coming as Cheltenham created the best chances.

Shane Duff powered a header just wide on 15 minutes after being found by Lee Ridley. Then Gillespie shot wide when clean through after a mistake by new signing Steve Lomas.
