Caretaker manager Phil Parkinson described Charlton's first clean sheet in 13 games as a building block as the club seek to climb away from the Coca-Cola Championship relegation zone.

Parkinson, who was looking to celebrate his first home game in charge with a win, saw Southampton goalkeeper Kelvin Davis produce an inspired performance with three breathtaking first half saves to break the hearts of home fans.

Davis was all that stood between Charlton and a first win in 10 games as he twice denied Hameur Bouazza and then on-loan Deon Burton with the pick of the bunch in first half stoppage time.

Charlton ran out of steam in the second half when Southampton dominated for long periods with home goalkeeper Nicky Weaver making crucial saves from David McGoldrick and substitute Matthew Paterson.

Parkinson, who has made no secret of his desire to take the job on a permanent basis, reflected: "Of course we would have liked a win but compared to where we've been in recent weeks it's something to build on.

"Confidence comes back slowly, it's all a question of building blocks. Today, that point and a clean sheet represented the first block being put in place.

"Unfortunately for us today we ran slap bang into a goalkeeper who was on the top of his game. He pulled off some incredible saves."
