KELLY HOLMES' dream year ended on a high on Sunday when she was crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The two-time Olympic gold medallist from Hildenborough, near Tonbridge, pipped rower Matthew Pinsent and cricket all-rounder Andrew Flintoff to win the coveted trophy.

Kelly, 34, fought back the tears as she thanked her coaches, family and friends for their support.

She said: "They have seen me struggle through a lifetime of trying and trying."

Kelly's guests in the audience included her mother Pam, dad Mick and brothers, plus former coach from Tonbridge, Dave Arnold.

She admitted how much the award meant to her. She said: "I have sat here more nervous tonight than I was on the 1500m start line in Athens.

"I can't say I was very subtle in saying I wanted to win this award, and I have been on the campaign trail. I see it as the biggest sporting honour your country can give you."

Kelly thanked the BBC for its sports coverage, paid tribute to her fellow sportsmen and woman and thanked the public for voting.

She added: "I still can't believe the support I have had, and thank you from the bottom of my heart."
