'Good talker' Pennock in fitness fight

ADRIAN PENNOCK is pushing himself to the limit in training in a make or break bid to play for Gillingham in Saturday's big match at home to Coventry. The centre-back and defensive linch-pin has missed the last three games with a hamstring strain and though player-manager Andy Hessenthaler said he was satisfied with Tuesday's flat back four in the 2-1 win at Grimsby, he would welcome Pennock's return.

"If I don't make it on Saturday it won't be for the want of trying," said Pennock. "I really don't know if I'll be fit but I'll be pushing myself flat out in training. I have the greatest confidence in our physiotherapist Ken Steggles and I'll be guided by him.

"I did feel a twinge on Monday and I reckon I'm no better than 50-50 but I'll be working hard because I'm desperate to play."

Hessenthaler said: "While I was pleased with our defensive performance at Grimsby, I prefer Adie in the side because apart from his ability, he's such a good talker at the back. But I won't take any chances because I don't want to run the risk of him being out for a lot longer."

With Barry Ashby serving a one-match suspension for the Worthington Cup, third round, tie against Southampton on October 9, the Gills boss needs a fully fit Pennock against the former Premier Division side.
