Kent table tennis player Lewis Gray put up a good show at the Slovakian Cadet (under-15) Open Championships in Bratislava.

The Angley School pupil from Benenden reached the third round of the doubles with Middlesex’s Zack Zilesnick after knocking out home pair Emmanuel Horvat and Peter Turcek and Croatian duo Luka Fucec and Nikola Hovat.

In the team event, the 14-year-old was unlucky to lose his singles match against Belgium’s Emilien Van Rossomme, but he won the doubles game against the Czech Republic and his singles encounter against Germany’s Dang Qiu.

The Weald Table Tennis Club member wasn’t so fortunate in the singles tournament as he lost to Denmark’s Nicky Marx and Holland’s Koen Hageracts before receiving a walkover against Serbia’s Katis.

On the youngster’s performance, England captain Paul Whiting said: "Lewis played exceptionally well in the doubles. In his other matches he put up a good fight against highly rated European cadets and did not disgrace himself."

At national level, the Weald club’s under-18s won two matches to finish behind Londoners Globe Academy in the Junior League. George Cox, Joe Watson and Daniella Gray combined for 15 victories.

In the Cadet League, despite staying unbeaten with three wins, Weald finished behind Battle ‘A’ on game average. Dan Lawrence was the club’s star, winning all nine of his games. Aaron Serfaty won six games and Jamie Pryor won three.

Head coach Ken Muhr said: "It is very pleasing that we now have a cohort of mainly local youngsters who, with good parental support, are starting to do well."
