Steven Gregory is often called on to do the dirty work in the heart of Gillingham’s midfield but remains happy to let others take the plaudits.

“I am used to it,” said the 26-year-old. “I am never going to be man-of-the-match or get the headlines but I am happy to do that role in the team.

“It is an important role and it can be overlooked. So long as the manager is happy and the team is happy, then that’s fine. I am not too fussed about not making headlines.”

Gregory was brought back into the team against Crewe, three weeks ago, and helped the side to their first win of the season.

Prior to that he had been dropped, left out of the matchday squad and put on the transfer list. He was one of the players boss Martin Allen made available for transfer, as he looked to shake things up and bring new faces into the team.

But since being re-introduced, Gregory and the rest have proved they are capable of bringing results themselves.

“I was pretty shocked (at being transfer-listed),” he said. “I have been out of teams before but it has never happened to me where I was playing regularly and then all of a sudden I am on the transfer list. It was a shock but I know how quickly things can change.

“I spoke to senior players here, Adam (Barrett) and Keds (Kedwell) and my family and just as quickly as it happened, I am back off it.

“People told me to keep working hard and to not let it get to me and that helped. Thankfully, now it is a distant memory.”
