Guernsey club eyes place in Kent League

The Kent League could be welcoming a new club for the 2009-10 campaign - from the Channel Islands.

Guernsey United are looking to play in an English semi-professional league next season and the Kent League, which is several levels above local football on the island, is seen as the most likely destination.

Details were revealed by the Guernsey FA and the people behind the idea confirmed their plans this week.

The subject was raised at the summer Kent League annual meeting when chairman Denise Richmond revealed discussions between the FA, the league and an unspecified Channel Island FA had taken place.

She has confirmed that the Channel Island team would cover all the travelling costs incurred by Kent League clubs for away games.

Guernsey's Culture and Leisure minister Mike O'Hara backed the plan telling thisisguernsey.co.uk: "Guernsey has got a rugby team playing in the UK, cricket playing internationals and athletics taking on top teams, but football has seemed to stagnate a little bit.

"It’s going to give Guernsey footballers more opportunities and put Guernsey football more in the marketplace."

The Kent League is seen as a strong possibility, given its close proximity to Gatwick airport and the current low number of clubs in the Kent League compared to its Sussex counterpart.
