Gills legend Andy Hessenthaler is backing Peter Taylor to be a success once again at Priestfield.

Hessenthaler was a key player under Taylor in 2000 when the Gills clinched promotion to the Championship.

Taylor was this week chosen as the man to lead the club out of trouble in League 1 this season, as chairman Paul Scally extended his contract as manager until the end of the season.

Hessenthaler said: “It is the right decision for everyone. There is too much uncertainty in an interim role and now he can really get his teeth into the job.

“I am sure he will be looking at players to bring in on loan as well, maybe from the Premier League.

“You’ll see people rolling their sleeves up and there are a number of people out of contract at the end of the season and Peter will have a say in that.

“Hopefully, the majority of the fans are happy he’s taken over and what the chairman has done is dangle the carrot."
