GILLS player-manager Andy Hessenthaler has been hit with two bans as the club prepares for the new season.

He was hit with a three-game touchline ban for comments made to the referee after the 5-2 defeat against Coventry.

In the same game, he was sent off for two bookable offences for which he has recieved a one-match ban to be served on the openeing day of the season. He was also hit with a £1,000 fine by the FA's disciplinary committee.

Hessenthaler said: "I know I'll have to watch the first game from the stand because I won't be playing. But if I select myself for the second match how can I not be on the bench?"

The club has contacted the FA for clarification.

Kitman Bob Lewin has been hit with a £150 fine for comments made to the fourth official during the same game.

Meanwhile, Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe has dismissed speculation linking the Saints with a move for Gills midfielder Danny Spiller.
