Hess: Butters' departure by no means certain

GILLINGHAM boss Andy Hessenthaler has hinted that transfer-listed Guy Butters' exit from Priestfield is by no means a formality. The centre-back, who produced an outstanding performance on his recall on Tuesday at Stockport, has asked to leave as no new contract offer has been forthcoming.

His present agreement expires next summer. Hessenthaler said: "Guy was first class against Stockport. A player can go on the transfer list but can come off just as easily."

Butters said: "I was under the impression that if I got fit and proved that my knee was okay then I was going to get a contract. As I've said before, I don't want to leave the club and would like to finish my career here."

Butters is expected to keep his place on Friday night against Birmingham even though Barry Ashby is on the mend.
