GILLINGHAM player-manager Andy Hessenthaler today vowed to contest any charge of bringing the game into disrepute following allegations that he gestured to Norwich supporters at the end of Tuesday’s 1-0 win.
Hessenthaler was called to referee Clive Penton’s room to be informed that a police officer and a steward had reported him and that a report would be submitted to the Football Association.
He told the club’s official website: “If a complaint is pursued by the Football Association then I will fight it all the way.
“This is complete nonsense and I’m livid about it. All I did was raise my clenched fists in the direction of our fans at the Town End to show how delighted I was with a hard-earned victory.
“No way did I intend to upset the Norwich fans. They weren’t my concern.” The club are appealing to any supporters who saw what happened to contact them.
A spokesman for the Football Association said that they were awaiting the referee’s report.
