Andy Hessenthaler has issued a ‘come and get me’ plea after finding himself out of work this week.

Hessenthaler agreed to end his role of director of football at Priestfield and is now itching to get back on the training ground.

“It’s time for me to look for that new challenge,” said the man who twice managed the Gills, taking them to their highest ever Football League position in 2003.

“I do want to get back into coaching, if there is an opportunity. I haven’t got anything lined up, no offers at all, but I am putting myself out there and I am available. If there is someone who is looking for somebody that is capable of driving a club forward then hopefully I will be their man.

“I am happy to coach at a higher level as well. I have had a couple of conversations about that situation but nothing concrete.

“I just want to be out coaching and if it’s a manager’s job, or a coaching job, I would be very interested. I am just ready now.”

Hessenthaler will always be regarded as a legend by fans, for his achievements as player and manager, but returning to Priestfield again seems unlikely.

“You should never say never, but I wouldn’t have thought so,” he said, when asked about any possible return.

“I had a joke with Gwen, the secretary, and the only time I will come back is to make her a cup of tea, like I’ve been doing for the last year!

“I’m sure I will be back to watch, but as for coming back and working for the club, I would say probably not.”
