GILLINGHAM manager Andy Hessenthaler says he has not ruled out a loan signing in an attempt to freshen up his squad. He declared: "After the two losses we thought that maybe the lads were tired after playing to their maximum over the last few months and things we starting to catch up with them.
"So we've made a few calls but nothing has happened, though we're still looking to bring people in."
Chairman Paul Scally flew to the island of Tobago in the Caribbean on Sunday as the club renewed interest in former Bristol Rovers' striker Nigel Pierre. Mr Scally wants to talk to FIFA's Jack Warner, the Caribbean's football supremo, about Pierre and the problems over a work permit which earlier scuppered the deal.
Meanwhile, Gillingham could find themselves pitted against Scottish giants Celtic and Rangers in next season's Worthington Cup. Football League chairman Keith Harris confirmed that serious consideration was being given to the idea.
He said: "The concept would fill most of us with enthusiasm. They are brilliantly supported teams and the notion of a major English and Scottish team clashing always attracts interest. It would also have great appeal for television."
Mr Harris stressed that no invitation would be made until the implications for teams north and south of the border had been considered. "There are hurdles but I don't see them being too high to overcome," he added.
